Birds in New Jersey 2014

Friday, 2 May 2014. Two new birdfeeders, continued.

The squirrels had watched for a week while the birds gorged on birdseed. It was time to go for it!

Both feeders proved to be squirrel-proof.

Back to getting the scraps on the ground.

The neighbour's female cardinal paid a visit.

On the left: adult breeding male House Sparrow; on the right, adult female House Sparrow.

A male house finch (top left) has been right in there with the house sparrows since day one.
I originally called it a cardinal, but noted, " It doesn't have a crest like the bird books show, so is it really a cardinal?" and corrected the ID in October 2014.
Below left, an adult breeding male House Sparrow (large black area on chest and white cheek).

Close-up of the male house finch.

When there are a lot of birds at the feeder, house sparrows chase away other house sparrows, and chase away the house finch.

The Inspector. "Good eating!"

A photo can't capture just how much seed is sprayed everywhere as the house sparrows aim just
for the kinds of seeds they like and let all the other kinds fall to the ground.

Looking at each other?

Today I could see how the sparrows -- and the house finch -- were both perching birds and climbing birds.

Watching them is better than television!
