Birds in New Jersey 2014

20 June 2014. House sparrows trying different footholds.

Mom? Dad? Feed me!

Sometimes a mourning dove will do an impersonation of a statue. For about five minutes, this bird sat totally still.

As other birds foraged around it, it didn't move a muscle.

It didn't even blink.

After months of birdwatching, a cool discovery. The slender house sparrow on the right isn't actually a house sparrow.
She's a female house finch. Her belly is streaked; a female house sparrow has a smooth belly.

Much fatter, and with no stripes on its belly: A female house sparrow. Munch, munch, munch, all day.

"Really? You couldn't tell that was a house finch all those weeks?" asked a mourning dove.

Never eating anything. Always just checking the place out.
