Birds in New Jersey 2014

5 September 2014 - A new bird appears! and, The goldfinch family saga, continued

Father goldfinch takes a drink.

A new bird!

It's a Carolina Wren, a very small and very quick-moving bird.

Meanwhile, the goldfinch family saga unfolds. Many, many juveniles join Dad on the feeder.

Even though they can extract the nyjer seeds for themselves, they still do the wing flapping and begging for food, along with
strident and persistent begging calls.

Titmouse

Juvenile goldfinches fly up to the "halo" above the feeder and do the wing-drooping, rapid wing-buzzing, and plaintive begging
sounds. "Dad, I'm up here. Feed me!" Will father goldfinch respond, or, like the house finch moms, ignore junior?
