Birds in New Jersey 2014
November 2014 - backyard visitors
10 November 2014. A mourning dove looks on as a male downy woodpecker goes for the suet.

This male house finch (the red-headed bird) picked the wrong lady to mess with: a female purple finch.

"You think you can share this feeder?"

"Yes, I do."

"Buzz off!" "TWO can eat at this feeder at once, you knuckle-brain!"

"Forget it, lady. I'm a territorial male house finch. Now amscray."

"Finally. Now I can eat in peace. I'm the King of the Sunflower Feeder."
  (All of these frequent altercations over pecking order happen in miniature;
  these birds each weigh 21g, about 3/4 of an ounce.)

Another bunch of migrating visitors: Forty or so grackles suddenly arrived.
