November 2014 - Number twenty-seven (photographed; actually 30 have been seen).
16 November 2014: The 27th bird species to appear in our backyard:
a little native sparrow, the song sparrow!
Here's a white-throated sparrow: two dark racing stripes on the head, a yellow area near the eyes, and faint, blurry streaking
on the breast.
And here's Number Twenty-Seven, the song sparrow: high-contrast stripes, and no yellow area.
Song sparrow also has a very distinctive chest pattern of three dark markings.
Welcome, Melospiza melodia!
And then, very bad news for the finches, chickadees, titmice, woodpeckers and nuthatches. Would that be a house sparrow
visiting the finch feeder? Could winter hunger overcome its fear of the strands of fishing line hung around the feeder?
Yes, a house sparrow. How to stop them from engulfing the finches' feeder, as well?
Chickadee goes for some nyjer seeds.
19 November 2014: hummingbird feeder, freezing up.
20 November: Since the squirrels discovered how to extract sunflower seeds from the mesh feeders, the only solution was to
buy yet another squirrel-resistant feeder.
