Birds in New Jersey 2014
28 November 2014
Making Squirrel Brownies. Ingredients: peanut butter and dry dogfood. Yum!
A few squirrels eat (and fight to protect their stash of) dry dogfood; others still don't recognize it as edible.
Attach a gate latch to the tree in the back yard...
... and hang a new winter roosting box on it.
As of this writing (25 January 2015) I have yet to detect any bird using the roosting boxes. There are too many natural
roosting sites nearby (many evergreen trees with thick foliage to keep the winter winds at bay).
To my delight, it turned out that Blue Jays like dry dog food: nutritious and half the price of birdseed. (Field Quality Premium
Bite-Sized Dog Food, 16 lb bag 7.26 kg, about 40¢ a pound).
The nightly routine in freezing temperatures: empty out and stack all the birds' water dishes. Then fill with lukewarm water
the next day.
