October 2017 - First sign of approaching winter

18 October - For all the birds, what you can drink is also what you can bathe in.

Our first winter bird: a white-throated sparrow

Meanwhile, up on the feeders, we can see up to three male and three female cardinals visiting the yard. They don't like to share a feeder; if a second one approaches, the first one leaves. If a darker beak is noticed, it denotes a young cardinal.

Put out peanuts, and it's a free-for-all, with a noisy red-bellied woodpecker arriving every 25 seconds or so to grab and store another peanut.
Other peanut thieves include blue jays, downy woodpeckers, cardinals, and titmice.
