A bit of snow arrives

1 December 2019: mini-icicles

The peanuts are intended for good friends like nuthatches, titmice, chickadees, blue jays, and woodpeckers. Of course, you can't stop house sparrows from joining in.

And they always invite lots of friends.

Once a gang of starlings finds a food source, the call goes out, and they swarm the goodies, behaving like overgrown house sparrows.

A female downy woodpecker waits patiently while the invaders attack the suet.

Finally.

Behind the main feeders, a hairy woodpecker scoots up the tree.

Finally, after a much later than usual arrival date, dark-eyed juncos are visiting the yard.

White-throated sparrow? No, it's delightful to see a song sparrow join the crowd. Like a white-throated, it kicks in one place to uncover seeds or suet covered by snow or leaves.

Not seen for almost a year, a Carolina wren checks out the peanut feeder.

A house sparrow lands and tries to intimidate it into leaving.

"You'll have to do better than that to drive me away."

The Carolina wren grabs some grub on the suet feeder.
