Birds in New Jersey 2014

Monday, 28 April 2014. Two new birdfeeders were hung up Sunday, 27 April.
The instructions said it could take up to two weeks for birds to get comfortable with them.

This high-tech one, closest to our garage, has a special cap that, when a squirrel lands on it, closes up the feeder openings.
It also has an "open" design: the food is fully accessible.

This feeder, further away from the garage, has a more restricted design: Vertical bars keep squirrels from taking the seeds,
but the bars also make it harder for birds to get at the food. Also, a different mix was used.

Birds were curious. This mourning dove sat on our outdoor table and had a good look at the new feeders.

House sparrows started exploring the new feeders. They preferred the one closest to the garage, which had an "open"
design -- just lean in and there's food.

They posed for photographs. "Will I be in the new Audubon book?"

Okay, who will blink first, me or the dove?

Soon, lots of sparrows were chowing down.

After trying to perch on the feeder, the dove realized it was easier to pick up all the seeds lying on the ground:
house sparrows are very messy eaters.
