Birds in New Jersey 2014

Tuesday, 19 August 2014 - a very special birdfeeder afternoon.

A brand-new bird appeared. A kind of woodpecker? It stayed on the ground the whole time.

Red on the back of the neck; spotted belly; black streak under the eye.... it is a male northern flicker! They don't climb trees;
they eat ants on the ground.

And that's what he did: he made "woodpecker" motions into the spaces between the paving stones in the back yard.

Meanwhile, on the black oil sunflower feeder, the titmouse returned, more confident. If the little black-capped chickadee was
on the feeder, titmouse would chase him off. Similar to the chickadee, titmouse would grab a seed and fly away.

Female and juvenile house finches had to share the feeder with the titmouse.

About a week ago, we spotted our first HUMMINGBIRD! Today I was able to photograph and video the little bird for the first time.
After I saw the hummingbird, I put the hummingbird feeder back into action, and have kept the sugar water fresh.

Back at the watering hole, an old friend, a juvenile grackle, played in and around the water dish.

At the tall watering pot, a bunch of house sparrows gathered. They congregate to eat, and they congregate to drink.

And there was another pleasant surprise.
